Imam named new Marawi police chief

A Maranao imam has been named head of the police unit in war-torn Marawi City, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao police director Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac said Wednesday.

In a press statement, Sindac said Superintendent Ebra Moxsir, Al Haj, assumed his office last Monday, July 24, and held his temporary office at Camp Bagong Amai Pakpak in Marawi City.

Moxsir, a native of Marawi City, is the president of the Imam Council of the Philippines and has been with the Philippine National Police Chaplain Service for 22 years.

He is a graduate of Mindanao State University where he served as president of the Student Council, a tactical officer, and a commandant. He is also a graduate of OBC, advance OSEC, with a masteral degree in Public Management major in Developmental Service and a doctorate in Public Administration.

Sindac said Moxsir took the challenge of being the chief of police of Marawi positively and on top of his agenda is to strictly follow the PNP operational procedure, the rule of law, and be an instrument to bring back peace in the city.

“A fusion of spiritual and strategic rule, Supt Moxsir is expected to deliver a traditional yet innovative way of handling his area of responsibility,” he said.

Marawi City has been the site of fierce clashes between government troops and members of the ISIS-inspired Maute group, which stormed the city on May 23, prompting President Rodrigo Duterte to place the entire Mindanao under martial rule. —Amita Legaspi/KBK/KVD, GMA News
