Intensity 5 quake hits Butuan; property damage feared


An intensity 5 quake rocked Butuan City in Agusan del Norte shortly before midnight Thursday. State seismologists said the quake was powerful enough to cause damage. The Philippine Institute of Volcanogy and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the magnitude-4.5 quake was recorded at 11:35 p.m. Thursday and the epicenter traced 32 kms northwest of Butuan. The quake was tectonic in origin, and was felt at Intensity 5 in Butuan City, and Intensity 4 in Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte. It was felt at Intensity 2 in Mainit, Surigao del Norte and in Surigao City; and at Intensity 1 in Hibok-Hibok, Camiguin province. While Phivolcs expected damage in some of the areas hit by the quake, it expects no aftershocks to take place. The incident took place 12 hours after a milder quake hit Butuan City. At the time, Phivolcs expected no aftershock. Phivolcs said the earlier quake was recorded off Butuan City in Agusan del Norte province at 11:45 a.m. Thursday. It said the quake was tectonic in origin and registered at magnitude 3.9. The quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Butuan City, Intensity 2 in Mainit, Surigao del Norte and Intensity 1 in Cagayan de Oro. In yet another incident, a magnitude-4 quake jolted Bohol province in Eastern Visayas at 1:36 p.m. Thursday. Phivolcs said it was tectonic in origin. The quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Garcia-Hernandez; Duero; Jagna; and Valencia, Bohol; Intensity 2 in Carmen, Bohol; and Intensity 2 in Cagayan de Oro City and Mandaue City. A mild quake measuring magnitude 2.9 in the Richter scale rocked Kidapawan City in Mindanao Thursday night, but state seismologists said they expect no casualty or damage to property. Phivolcs said the quake was recorded at 6:34 p.m. and its epicenter traced 7 kms southeast of Kidapawan City. It was tectonic in origin and was felt at Intensity 3 in Makilala town in North Cotabato; and at Intensity 2 in Kidapawan City. - GMANews.TV
