8 Lanao cops under investigation over death of suspect, his family

The Philippine National Police is now conducting investigation into the killing of a suspect in a case of frustrated murder, his pregnant live-in partner, and their five-month-old child during a police operation in Lanao del Norte on Monday.

Internal Affairs Service (IAS) Inspector General Alfegar Triambulo said Wednesday  the IAS-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is looking into the incident.

"Automatic po [na iimbestigahan ‘yan]. Ang IAS-ARMM ang mag-imbestiga ng case na ‘yan," Triambulo said in a text message to GMA News Online.

Pending the results of the investigation, the policemen involved in the operation are under restrictive custody, according to Region 10 spokesperson Superintendent Lemuel Gonda in a separate text message.

"Nasa PHQ (provincial headquarters) ng Lanao del Norte Provincial Police Police, [ang] eight personnel (two police commissioned officers and six police non-commissioned officers)," he said.

Based on a report signed by Senior Superintendent Leopoldo Cabanag, Lanao del Norte PPO acting provincial director, the operation was conducted around 4 a.m. on September 11 in Purok 6, Brgy. Taguranao. Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

The police were supposed to serve the arrest warrant against Bevino Laride for frustrated murder and Jonel Ocana Laride for attempted murder.

Jonel was not around during the service of his arrest warrant. Only Bevino was there but he allegedly fired several times at the approaching SWAT team using an M2 carbine rifle.

The lead scout, PO1 Yasser Macatber, was wounded in the shooting, prompting the troops to fire back, resulting in the death of Bevino, his partner Virginia Delibo, and their son, who were inside the house at that time.

The wounded SWAT member was brought to Lanao Del Norte Provincial Hospital and later transferred to Mercy Hospital in Iligan City for treatment.

Recovered from the crime scene were the M2 carbine rifle with one steel magazine loaded with seven cartridges, eight fired cartridge cases, and a .22 rifle.  —KBK/KVD, GMA News
