15-yr-old student killed as NPA members fire at soldiers in Masbate

Suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) killed a 15-year-old student in an attack on soldiers repairing a daycare center in Cawayan, Masbate on Saturday afternoon.

Captain Joash Pramis, spokesman of the Philippine Army's 9th Infantry Division, said the student identified as Vincent Pekiro was watching soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Battalion repair a daycare center in Barangay Libertad when an undetermined numbef of rebels opend fire at the troops at around 4:30 p.m.

Pramis said Pekiro was hit in the hail of bullets from the rebels.

"According to the troops, they heard five shots and the first one hit the boy. He was watching what the soldiers were doing at that time," Pramis said.

He said the troops did not retaliate because aside from Pekiro, several other civilians were also at the daycare center.

The rebels withdrew after shooting at the soldiers.

Troops have been sent to go after the rebels, the military spokesman said. —ALG, GMA News
