How to stop violent extremism? Overpower them, local gov't official says

How can a nation eradicate violent extremism? For a local government official, government forces should outnumber and outpower insurgency groups.

"Credible defense cannot be all soft. We had to maintain a presence and we have to let them know that we outman them and we overpower them. Sounds cruel... we have to add more men and more guns," said Sarangani Gov. Steven Solon during a forum about violent extremism in Makati City.

"They need to know that you are stronger than them so they will not attack," Solon added.

The governor pointed out that violent extremism usually starts with an extreme belief or desire.

"It's a desire for extreme wealth or extreme political power or the desire for conquest," Solon said.

He explained that in their province, threats usually come from Moro extremists, Moro rebels, and New People's Army members.

Solon underscored the importance of setting up a credible and stronger defense, noting that "Sarangani must be seen with as 'hardened' with a credible defense posture."

The government official also mentioned that "prosperity does an excellent job at preventing violent extremism and improving overall security and public safety."

"Prosperity does the best job in preventing violent extremism. I'm not talking about money, wealth... I'm talking about the biblical sense of prosperity. You know ... health, good family..." Solon said. — BAP, GMA News
