4 Pinoy fishermen from Palawan rescued near Malaysian island

Four Filipino fishermen were rescued by Malaysian authorities after six days of drifting at sea.

A report on New Straits Times said the fishermen were rescued by Malaysian military personnel near Pulau Billean, Sandakan.

The fishermen were Arnei Fetalvero Viana, 40; chief mate Josefph Aque, 30; Roger Chaves Cheif, 49; and Thomas Taboso, 42.

The fishermen got stranded after their boat capsized off Mangsee Islands in Palawan at the height of tropical cyclone Vinta.

The fishermen survived by clinging on to the pieces of their boat.

They were treated for sunburn and given adequate food and water at a settlement post and then turned over to Philippine authorities after staying at a military settlement in Pulau Billean.

MK ATB 2 Commander Brigadier General Md Amin said they are still looking for a tugboat with a crew of 16 Filipinos.

Personnel are also looking for 30 to 40 boats that capsized around Mangsee Island.

Local authorities in Palawan said over the weekend that at least 59 people, mostly fishermen, are still missing in Mangsee Island.

Thirty-two bodies, mostly of fishermen, have also been recovered by rescue and retrieval teams. —Rie Takumi/ALG, GMA News
