Soldiers rescue infant, 88-year-old in Surigao City flashfloods


Tropical Depression Basyang brought heavy rains and caused flashfloods in Surigao City and nearby towns on Tuesday leaving residents stranded.

In Barangay Luna, Surigao City the 30th Infantry Battalion’s Charlie Company under 1Lt. Dario Amaranto rescued a five-month old infant who was placed inside a basin.

In Barangay Pautao, Bacuag town in Surigao del Norte, Private First Class Pendatun Tagbe and Private Adrian Hapin of the 36th Infantry Battalion together with some residents rescued 88-year-old Epifania Iligan who was trapped inside her house.

Iligan was immediately brought to the hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the troops of 402nd Infantry Brigade (29IB) to the residents of Barangay Bangonay, Jabonga town in Agusan del Norte also extended assistance to those who were affected by the flash floods.

As of posting, four people have died in Surigao del Norte while three remain missing and 7,000 families have been evacuated. — Merlyn Manos/BAP, GMA News
