San Jose de Antique bishop Lazo named new Archbishop of Jaro

Pope Francis has named Bishop Jose Romeo Lazo of San Jose de Antique the new Archbishop of Jaro, Iloilo.

According to a Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) report on Wednesday, the pontiff has accepted the resignation of incumbent Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo and appointed Lazo to take his place.

Archbishop-elect Lazo was appointed bishop of Kalibo by Pope John Paul II in 2003.

He was then appointed by Pope Benedict XVI  to head the Diocese of San Jose de Antique six years later.

The CBCP said the 77-year-old prelate will be the 13th Archbishop of Jaro, one of the largest archdioceses in the Philippines with a population of more than three million.

Lagdameo will remain the Apostolic Administrator “sede vacante” of the archdiocese until Lazo takes official canonical possession. — Margaret Claire Layug/BM, GMA News
