Army: 6 NPA members, including UP student and 2 minors, nabbed in Negros

The military on Saturday said it had arrested six suspected New People's Army members, including a former University of the Philippines (UP) student and two minors, in Mabinay, Negros Oriental.

Captain Eduardo Precioso Jr., spokesperson of the Philippine Army's 3rd Division, said the suspected NPA members were arrested in Barangay Luyang at around 2 a.m.

Precioso said a team of Army soldiers were dispatched to the village after they received a report about at least 20 armed NPA members extorting money from the villagers.

He said the rebels were also harassing the villagers.

Precioso said the six NPA members were arrested after a 45-minute encounter.

He said the UP student was a female and took a mass communication course at the university's Cebu campus.

The Army said its troops recovered firearms and explosives from the captured rebels, including the two minors. —ALG, GMA News
