Cebu City to implement project for single mothers

After granting the wish of an engineering student to open the public library 24/7, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña is directing his attention to single mothers and start a program that will allow them to work and still spend time with their children.

In a Facebook post on his official page, Osmeña said the Cebu City Government is working with Azpired, a business process outsourcing company, to have a building at the Cebu I.T. Park where single mothers and their children can live and work.

"You will be employed by Azpired, but you will all live together in the same building to minimize your expenses and maximize your time with your kids," Osmeña said.

Osmeña said single mothers will not have to worry about traffic or transportation cost.

Children will be transported to school, easing worries of single mothers.

"When not in school, they will be taken cared of and grouped with children of similar age so they will not have to be alone while you’re at work," added Osmeña.

There will be separate staff to take care of cooking meals and will be served in a communal area. This, Osmeña noted, will minimize the costs of laundry, food and housing supplies.

Osmeña said a common area will be available "to socialize with your friends and play with your children."

"You will live in an environment where you have the security of knowing all your neighbors and where collectively you can grow."

Osmeña said this system is loosely based on Israel's kibbutz, a collectively owned and run community.

If the system works, the Mayor, who is gaining praises in social media for listening to his constituents, said they will implement the same project for single fathers and young married couples.

"The idea is not to let you live here forever. The goal is to give you a platform for you to launch yourself from. I don’t want to have to help you forever; to do so is a disservice and second only to slavery. I want you to have the tools you need to help yourself, so one day you will thrive. When you no longer need anyone, that is when I have done my job," said Osmeña.

As of posting, Osmeña's post has generated 9,500 reactions and 4,782 shares. — Liantine Grego/BAP, GMA News
