200 displaced after NPA, military clash in Misamis Occidental


At least 200 people have been displaced as the military launched an offensive against the New People's Army (NPA) in Aloran, Misamis Occidental.

The Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office (PPO) said a total of 218 people or 54 families have evacuated to the town's gymnasium following an armed encounter between the military and the NPA at 3:15 p.m. on Monday.

It said that aside from the ground assault by the Philippine Army, the rebels' position in Barangay Sinampungan were also bombarded with artillery fire. The military also used a Philippine Air Force helicopter.

All police units in the province have been placed on full alert. Checkpoints have also been set up around Aloran and its outskirts, the Misamis Occidental PPO added.

Meanwhile, Major General Roseller Murillo, commander of the 1st Tabak Infantry Division, said their troops responded to a tip from a resident that a group of NPA members have been extorting money from them.

Murillo said troops encountered at least 20 rebels in the village.

No one has been reported injured or killed in the class.
