Laoag Vice Mayor Michael Fariñas dies in car accident

Laoag City Vice Mayor Michael Fariñas died in a car crash on Wednesday.

The city's police chief Superintendent Dominic Guerrero confirmed the development.

Fariñas was driving his black Mercedes Benz when his vehicle rammed into a concrete barrier along the bypass road in Barangay 55-C in Vira, Laoag City between 5:45 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The vice mayor was then brought to Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Fariñas was with his friend, Senior Police Officer 2 Melchor Geronimo, who survived the accident but sustained injuries.

"Kasama niya 'yung pulis natin at na-overshoot po sila doon sa curved area ng Barangay Vira ng Laoag City so tumama po 'yung sasakyan niya doon sa may concrete barrier at nahulog doon sa may palayan," Guerrero said in a phone interview.

Guerrero said they are still investigating the cause of the crash, adding that they have yet to talk to Geronimo to also confirm on whether they were not wearing seatbelts at that time.

"'Yun po ang isang tinitingnan natin kung totoo pong hindi naka-seatbelt, malalaman po natin kung pwede ng makausap si SPO2 Geronimo," he said.

Fariñas is a nephew of House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas. —JST/KBK, GMA News
