Man allegedly posing as police operative nabbed with drugs, guns

DUMAGUETE CITY — A man who may have been posing as a police operative was arrested with one other person for illegally possessing firearms and drugs at Sitio Canday-ong in Barangay Calindagan in this city Thursday dawn.

Dumaguete Police chief Superintendent Jonathan Pineda said that a card identifying the man as a member of the Eastern Visayas’ Crime Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) was seized from the suspect.

However, Pineda said, no records have been found about the man's affiliation with the CIDG in the PNP database.

Pineda added that because of this, the man will be charged with usurpation of authority.

Illegal possession of firearms and illegal drugs charges will also be filed against the two suspects. Confiscated from them were two .45 caliber pistols, live ammunition, seven possibly fake P200 bills, and four sachets of a substance suspected to be shabu.

The two were nabbed after authorities received a call from a concerned citizen in Calindagan, where they were reportedly wielding their guns.

Police are now looking at the possibility that the two suspects have been involved in several holdup incidents, particularly in Amlan and Mabinay towns.

“’Yung isa kasi sa mga baril, replica, kaya posibleng ginagamit nila yun bilang panakot,” Pineda told GMA News Online in a phone interview.

He added that as of posting time, they are still coordinating with the local Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) office in this city to check whether the P200 bills confiscated from the two suspects are indeed fake.

If they are, the suspects will also be charged with possessing counterfeit money. — BM, GMA News
