Vice mayor of Trece Martires City, Cavite shot dead —police

The vice mayor of Trece Martires City in Cavite was killed in an ambush attack shortly before 3 p.m. on Saturday.

A report on Super Radyo dzBB identified the victim as Vice Mayor Alex Lubigan, who was attacked in front of the  Korean Hospital in Barangay Luciano.

An initial police investigation showed that the 44-year-old vice mayor was on his way home on board a black Toyota Hilux (YV4077) when attackers on a black Mitsubishi Montero fired at his car.

Lubigan's driver, as well as his aide, who were earlier reported wounded in the attack, passed away while being treated.

Authorities said the attack took place on Trece Martires-Indang Road in Barangay Luciano in front of Korean Hospital at about 2:53 p.m.

Police are still investigating the incident for the motive of the attack and the identities of the attackers.

Malacañang said it "strongly condemns" the attack, even as it urged the police to conduct a fair and thorough investigation.

Lubigan's death came on the heels of three other attacks of local officials this week: Tanauan, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili on Monday and General Tinio, Nueva Ecija mayor Ferdinand Bote on Tuesday, who both died; and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Assemblyman Sidik Amiril, also on Monday, who survived. —LBG, GMA News
