Red tide alert up over parts of Surigao, Bohol, Palawan, Samar

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources on Friday said the red tide toxin has been detected in parts of Surigao del Sur, Bohol, Palawan and Eastern Samar.

The affected areas are:

  • Hinatuan Bay, Surigao del Sur
  • Lianga Bay, Surigao del Sur
  • coastal waters of Dauis, Bohol
  • coastal waters of Tagbilaran City, Bohol
  • Puerto Princesa Bay, Palawan
  • Honda Bay, Palawan
  • Matarinao Bay, Eastern Samar.

BFAR director and Agriculture Undersecretary for Fisheries Eduardo Gongona advised residents not to eat shellfish and alamang (Acetes sp.) from these areas as these are not safe for human consumption.

However, it said that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs caught in these areas may be eaten as long as they are fresh, washed thoroughly, and with internal organs such as gills and intestines removed before cooking.

The coastal waters of Leyte, which was previously found to have toxic red tide, are now red tide-free. —KG, GMA News
