14 dead as vehicle falls into ravine in Kalinga

Fourteen persons, mostly senior citizens, were killed on Tuesday afternoon after the jeep they were riding fell into a 200-meter ravine in Balbalan, Kalinga.

Initial investigation showed that the vehicle lost its brakes while traversing a curve around 2:20 p.m.

Senior Police Officer 4 Ruff Manganip, Kalinga assistant public information officer, said that two others died at the Kalinga hospital.

The victims were on their way home from the town center after getting their Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program allowances at the ATM machine in Barangay.

Authorities earlier said that 15 died in the mishap but the number of fatalities had been corrected by the Kalinga PNP.

Balbalan has been one of the remotest and upland towns in Kalinga.

A third-class town with 12,195 people in 2015 census, its roads have been mostly rough and uphill.  —NB, GMA News
