7 provinces totally without power due to Ompong —NGCP

At least seven provinces experienced total power outage on Saturday during the onslaught of Tyhpoon Ompong.

According to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), the provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Cagayan, Kalinga Apayao, Abra, Mountain Province, and Nueva Vizcaya "totally have no power" as the grid operator's 12 230-kilovolt and 24 69-kilovolt transmission lines in northern Luzon tripped due to the weather disturbance.

The NGCP also said some provinces still have power, including La Union with 17 percent power, Benguet with 10 percent, Pangasinan with 15 percent, Isabela with 11 percent, and Zambales with 90 percent.

NGCP head of Operations and Maintenance Gil Listano said the company will assess and restore the tripped power lines once the weather improves.

"If weather permits gagawin namin na ma-restore ito... Wala pa kaming complete damage assessment, sa ngayon wala pa kaming idea pero [of the extent of damage] pero ine-expect namin na mapabilis kapag nakuha ang data on the field," Listano said at a briefing.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 was raised over 11 areas as Typhoon Ompong (international name: Mangkhut) passed over Laoag City on Saturday morning. — MDM, GMA News
