DENR may allow entry of more tourists to Boracay in 2019 —Cimatu

BORACAY ISLAND - Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources may increase the carrying capacity of Boracay in 2019.

Earlier, the DENR has pegged to 19,000 tourists per day the maximum allowable tourists who can visit Boracay.

"The said number is based on the maximum number of tourists that can visit the front beach of Boracay," he said during a media interview here.

Bulabog Beach is one of the several beaches in this resort island. The others include the Balinghai Beach, Puka Beach, and the White Beach (front beach), among others.

The said Bulabog Beach became famous as it became the center of sea sports activities in Boracay. It was also in Bulabog Beach where video footage was taken earlier this year showing waste water being dumped into the sea. President Rodrigo Duterte then called Boracay a cesspool.

Currently, the DENR has considered Bulabog Beach as safe for swimming after almost six months of rehabilitation.

"I am still determining what to do for Bulabog. It may become a center of events for this resort island. Soon, tourists would come and enjoy the area," Cimatu said. —KG, GMA News
