No mandatory payment upon enrollment - DepEd

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines - A ranking education official in Benguet renewed calls for teachers not to force parents to pay fees when enrolling their children. Department of Education (DepEd)-Benguet Division Superintendent Mary Namuhe said parents are not obliged to pay any fee when enrolling their children in public schools. "It is clear in the DepEd order that collection of fees should not be done upon enrollment. Parents can pay the required school fees later but not upon enrollment," Namuhe said, adding parents should avoid paying voluntarily the fees when they enroll their children. She said even the Parents Teachers and Community Association (PTCA) should not be made a mandatory fee during enrollment. Among the compositions of the school fees being collected by public schools during enrollment include PTCA fee, security guard fee, clean and green, Boys and Girls Scout of the Philippines fees, photocopying of test papers, anti-Tuberculosis and Red Cross. Classes on public schools will open June 10. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has ordered the DepEd to ensure that students will not be inconvenienced when they troop back to school. This year, an estimated 21.66 million students are expected to enroll, 18.81 million of which are in the public schools and 2.85 million in the private schools. DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus reported 10,000 new classrooms have been constructed and 10,000 new teachers have been hired for the school year 2008-2009. He also said a P3-billion subsidy has been allotted for students who will not be accommodated in public schools. - Sun.Star
