INTERACTIVE: The wealth in the House of Reps as seen in 2012 SALNs

Since the ouster of former Chief Justice Renato Corona last year, the public has become more keenly aware of how public officials disclose and hide their wealth.

Now nearly a household word is an important bureaucratic tool for keeping officials honest – the SALN, or the Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth.

According to the recently released 2012 SALNs of the House of Representatives, the wealthiest is still Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao, whose net worth ballooned by more than P400 million.

Following him in growth in net worth is Las Piñas Rep. Mark Villar, son of Senator Manny Villar and Senator-elect Cynthia Villar, with a net worth increase of P200 million.

Despite some P10 million in new liabilities, former first lady and Ilocos Norte 2nd district Rep. Imelda Marcos is still the second richest legislator in the lower house with some P922 million in net worth.

Our interactive graph presents data from the latest SALNs of members of the House of Representatives, comparing them to figures that appeared in the statements they submitted in 2011, and sorting them into categories that may be accessed through the tabs.

Users can mouse over the graph to see how each legislator in the lower house stacks up relative to his or her colleagues, and how much he or she gained or lost over the past year.

Data presented, however, no longer includes the following legislators, for various reasons:
  • Cavite 1st district Rep. Joseph Emilio Abaya (appointed as Secretary of Transportation and Communications)
  • Bohol 2nd district Rep. Erico Aumentado (died December 2012)
  • Dinagat Islands Rep. Ruben Ecleo (removed from Congress)
  • Sorsogon 1st district Rep. Salvador Escudero III (died August 2012)
  • 1-UTAK party-list Rep. Homer Mercado (resigned)
The SALNs of the following representatives were also unavailable:
  • Northern Samar 1st district Rep. Raul Daza
  • Basilan Rep. Hadjiman Hataman-Salliman
  • Nueva Ecija 1st district Rep. Josefina Joson
  • Cavite 3rd district Rep. Erineo Maliksi
