DOLE to do profiling of OFWs skills

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is set to undertake global mapping and profiling system for overseas Filipino workers' skills reportedly to ensure quality jobs and protection of OFWs. In a press statement, Labor Secretary Arturo Brion said that the global mapping is the focus of the 2007 conference of labor attaches representing 34 Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLO) worldwide. Attending the ongoing conference are Philippine labor attaches to major OFW host countries like Hong Kong, Macau, Tokyo, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Brunei Darussalam, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, Korea, Riyadh, Unaizah, Alkhobar, Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Qatar, Oman, Israel, Jordan, Saipan, Washington, D.C., Canada, Rome, Milan, Geneva, Madrid, Greece, Lebanon, and Brussels. The first phase of the five-day POLO conference was held on December 27 and 28, 2006 and the culminating phase will be on January 3 to 5, 2007. Acting Labor Secretary Danilo P. Cruz cited the role the POLOs play in finding ways to address the challenges in overseas employment--especially in improving services, finding employment opportunities and crafting a reintegration plan for returning OFWs. The meeting will also review the Philippine overseas employment policy to make it more responsive to issues affecting OFWs and their families such as the social costs of migration, the growing number of undocumented workers abroad and their protection. "We shall be implementing, soon, a global OFW skills mapping and profiling system amid world- market demand for migrant workers. This is vital in our effort to ensure quality jobs for our overseas workers," Cruz said. -GMANews.TV
