Private lawyers mahalaga kontra katiwalian sa gobyerno– Marcelo

Dapat ipagpatuloy ng mga private at government prosecutors ang pagtutulungan para magtagumpay ang mga isinasampang kaso laban sa mga tiwaling opisyal sa gobyerno. Ito ang inihayag ni dating Ombudsman Simeon Marcelo sa isinagawang pagtitipon ng mga prosekusyon sa kaso ni dating Pangulong Joseph Estrada na nahatulang guilty ng Sandiganbayan. Sa kanyang talumpati sa Boracay Room ng EDSA-Shangri-La Hotel sa Mandaluyong City noong Biyernes ng gabi, nanawagan si Marcelo sa mga private lawyers na magboluntaryo upang tulungan ang pamahalaan sa paghabol at pagpapakulong sa mga tiwaling opisyal sa gobyerno. “The problem of graft and corruption is a shared responsibility. I hope our lawyers would realize that the solution to corruption needs partners in private practice who will not just complain but who would buckle down to work..., who would not mind doing concerted, even tedious work," pahayag niya. Ang kaso ni Estrada ay isa umanong halimbawa na posibleng mangyari ang kanyang mungkahi. Inamin niya na nakahinga siya ng maluwag nang marinig ang hatol ng Sandiganbayan sa dating presidente. “This case was different. [It’s] more like of relief because finally, there is closure, unlike the Marcos cases," sabi ni Mercelo. Kabilang sa mga private prosecutors na dumalo sa nasabing pagtitipon ay ang magkapatid na Pablito at Arno Sanidad, Anthony Peralta, John Jerico Balisnomo, Miguel Silos, Marichu Lambino, Leonard de Vera, Rafael Antonio Santos, Dennis Funa, Augusto San Pedro Jr., Christian Robert Lim, Joe Nathan Tenefrancia at Elmar Galacio. Si Special Prosecutor Dennis Villa-Ignacio na nanguna sa grupo ng government prosecution ay dumalo rin sa kasiyahan at pinuri ang mga private lawyers. Bagamat ang atensyon ng media ay nasa government prosecutors, malaki umano ang naging papel ng private lawyers na nagsagawa ng mga tinawag na “legwork" tulad ng paghanap sa mga testigo, paghahanda sa kanila na tumayo sa witness stand, at paghagilap sa documentary evidence. “It is a little-known fact that despite the avalanche of pleadings filed and the pressure of continuously presenting 76 witnesses in the Estrada plunder case over a period of almost one and a half years from October 2001 to March 2003, the prosecution never asked for a single postponement in this case until it has completed the presentation of its evidence," ani Marcelo. Sinabi ni Marcelo na ang nangyari sa kaso ni Estrada ay dapat magsilbing babala sa iba pang opisyal sa pamahalaan. “Our citizens should make our leaders realize that for as long as there are men and women who make it their crusade to safeguard and advance the Rule of Law, there are no safe havens for the corrupt," pagtatapos niya. - GMANews.TV
