AFP on alert for NPA's 40th founding anniversary

MANILA, Philippines - The Armed Forces of the Philippines has put its forces on alert for possible attacks by the New People's Army (NPA) for its 40th founding anniversary this Sunday. Radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. reported that AFP Civil Relations Service head Brig. Gen. Gaudencio Pangilinan said troops are ready to square off with the NPAs if they attack. Pangilinan said the NPA usually tries to mount a "show of force" during its anniversary. Earlier, dzXL radio reported the AFP placed its troops in Bicol on alert for the NPA's 40th anniversary. The dzXL report said the AFP ordered tighter security on key installations including cell phone sites of Globe Telecoms, which are frequent targets of NPA attacks. The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. Peace talks with the mainstream communist group has remained stalled since August 2004. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo had earlier directed security forces to crush the communist insurgency by the end of her term in June 2010. - GMANews.TV
