MANILA, Philippines – The Wild Card Gym in Hollywood will be brimming with Filipino ring talents in the next two months.

Of course, there’s reigning pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao, who’s on his second week of working out at the famed sweatshop owned by Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach for his May 2 clash with Ricky Hatton.

And by next week, another marquee ring warrior from the Philippines will join the Pac Man in the gym: World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Gerry Peñalosa.

According to boxing website Philboxing.com, the 36-year-old Peñalosa arrived in LA on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila), eager to open camp for the final stages of his build up for own world title fight with undefeated Puerto Rican Juan Manuel Lopez. Peñalosa vies for Lopez’s WBO Junior featherweight belt on April 25 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Peñalosa bids to become a three-division world titlist after conquests at superflyweight (for the WBC and WBF) and bantam (WBO). He had previously vied for the WBO’s 122 diadem in 2007 against then champion Daniel Ponce de Leon but lost a controversial decision.

Now at the twilight of his career, Peñalosa vowed to go all out in training to finally nail that third division crown against the Puerto Rican sensation.

“I’m training hard. This is the most important fight of my career. I will continue to train at the Wild Card Gym in L.A. under the guidance of Coach Freddie after my return from the presscon in Puerto Rico this Saturday," Peñalosa was quoted in the Philboxing.com interview.

Considered as one of the best technical boxers in the business, Peñalosa had fought a tune-up fight last month and outpointed Mexican opponent German Meraz in Cebu in preparation for Lopez.

On the side, the fighter dubbed “Fearless" helped train reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight kingpin Nonito Donaire, Jr. for his April 19 title defense against Mexican-American Raul Martinez. –GMANews.TV
