Algieri’s difficulty making weight will haunt him in the ring – Pacquiao camp

MACAU - Chris Algieri's failure to make the weight will make him easy prey for the hungry predator that is Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao's assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez said Algieri's failure to initially make the 144-pound catch weight has a huge physical and psychological effect on Algieri when he battles Pacquiao for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title fight Sunday at the Cotai Arena inside the Venetian Macao here.

Fernandez, a boyhood pal of the Filipino ring idol, said they were surprised to learn that Algieri had a breakfast of eggs, oatmeal and coffee moments before the official weigh-in of the biggest fight of his career considering that he has a bachelor's and master' degree in nutrition.

"Mabigat ang itlog sa sikmura, nag-eexpand yun after 30 minutes," said Fernandez, who will serve as Freddie Roach's chief deputy in the corner of the eight-division champion.

"Nagulat nga kami ng nalaman namin na nag-almusal pa pala siya bago magtimbang. Kahit sabihin pa na nakapasok sya sa 144-pound weight limit, may epekto pa din yun sa utak at katawan nya sa araw ng laban."

Algieri, an inexperienced 30-year old former kickboxer, tipped the scales at 144.2 pounds in his first try, prompting his handlers to give him a 30-minute stationary workout to shed off the excess fluid in his body.

He made it in the second try as he weighed 143.6 pounds.

"Kahit kaunting timbang lang yun, malaki pa din magiging epekto nun sa laban," Fernandez added. "Tingnan nyo, walang power yan pagdating ng laban bukas."

Algieri, however, was confident, saying that he can easily take care of business despite their boo-boo at the weighing scale.

"I'd rather be well-fed than show up dry and sucked up," he said.  — JST/JDS, GMA News
