After defeat, Algieri pays tribute to 'best in the world' Pacquiao

Chris Algieri had nothing but good things to say about Manny Pacquiao after losing to the Filipino champion via unanimous decision on Sunday in Macau.

Algieri, who came in as a huge underdog in the fight, was completely dominated by the Filipino ring icon, who sent his opponent to the canvas six times.

"It's not so much the punching power, to tell you the truth. It's how he mixes his punches up," said the 30-year-old fighter after the bout. "Manny is the best in the world at fighting like Manny Pacquiao."

Before the fight, Algieri's camp was confident that they could pull an upset against the 36-year-old veteran, but Pacquiao's speed and skill proved too much for the American boxer.

"He has a very, very distinct and unique style that he's perfected for what works specifically for his body type and his style and what works for him," said Algieri, who absorbed the first loss of his professional career. "He's got so much experience."

Algieri was completely outclassed in the fight, but he said that only one punch — a left hook from Pacquiao in the ninth round — really hurt him.

"I sat down on a left hook," he said.

Algieri took some pride in getting in some punches that hurt Pacquiao too. "I think I've landed some shots that made him think."

In the end, however, Algieri completely conceded defeat.
