Why Chris Algieri's gameplan didn't work against Manny Pacquiao

MACAU — Appearing in the post-fight press conference with a pair of dark sunglasses, Chris Algieri claimed that he was satisifed with the way the fight went despite failing to knock the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown off the head of Manny Pacquiao.

For most of the match, Algieri tried to stick to his hit-and-run game plan.

While he was able to run, he was unable to hide, as Pacquiao sent Algieri to the canvas no less than six times during the fight.

"We wanted to be very cautious early on," said Algieri following the biggest fight of his young boxing career at the Cotai Arena inside The Venetian here Sunday.

"Manny knew our gameplan. He kept on attacking me while I was trying to be careful in the first few rounds. He is a great fighter. His experience really showed up."

Beaming with confidence against an undefeated foe, Pacquiao battered Algieri right from the start and sent him down six times, the last coming in the 10th round via a powerful left bomb that nearly forced referee Genaro Rodriguez to stop the fight.

But the stoppage didn't happen.

Instead, Rodriguez gave Algieri a standing eight count, giving him a golden opportunity to survive the round and the fight as well.

"I got reckless in the 10th round," said Algieri, who suffered his first loss in 21 professional fights. "Manny was very careful in his approach. He was very tactical in his attacks."

"But it is what it is. I think I have to put this episode in my rear view and focused on the great things ahead of me. It's going to be an exciting 2015. I'm looking forward to it." — STR/JST/TJD, GMA News
