Why Pacquiao will beat Mayweather, according to Freddie Roach

HONG KONG — Floyd Mayweather doesn't stand a chance against Manny Pacquiao.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's Hall of Fame trainer, fired the first shot when he said that Pacquiao will easily knock out Mayweather with the way the Filipino ring icon performed against Chris Algieri in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title fight last Sunday at the Cotai Arena inside The Venetian Macao.

Pacquiao destroyed Algieri from start to finish, punishing him with six knockdowns that prompted observers to believe that the power and the intensity of the Filipino champion inside the ring is back.

Mayweather, on the other hand, is still fresh off a back-to-back wins over Marcos Maidana in the welterweight class. While their first match was unimpressive, Mayweather showed his brilliance in the second match, even though he still failed to stop the brawler from Argentina.

"Yes, Pacquiao will beat Floyd with his performance against Algieri,” Roach told Filipino sportswriters after the postfight conference. “You know,Floyd about two years ago, I thought it’s about even. Now I think Manny will knock him out.”

Roach's reason: “Floyd can’t run like he used to. He can’t move, his legs are shot, he’s a washed up, old fighter. We’ll knock out Floyd.”

Roach added that he saw the extra bounce in Pacquiao's legs and added snap on his punches against Algieri.

And even if he is turning 36 on Dec. 17, Pacquiao showed that he can still go through the whole 12 rounds without missing a beat or suffering from cramps.

“Manny did well and hopefully the Mayweather fight happens. And I look forward at getting him ready for that,” said Roach.

A lot of factors terribly hurt what could be the biggest and the richest fight in the history of professional boxing. From purse sharing and drug testing to personal grudge and bitterness, Mayweather tried his best to avoid clashing with Pacquiao.

Things took a different turn last week when Top Rank CEO Bob Arum announced that there is a strong move to make the fight happen. Pacquiao's business adviser Mike Koncz doused gas into the flame when he said that they are willing to cave in to whatever condition that Mayweather wants just for the fight to materialize.

Roach said Mayweather fear of tasting his first defeat is the main reason why the American fighter, who currently holds World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council welterweight and super welterweight titles, is reluctant to fight Pacquiao.
