Makati City throwing its own hero's parade for Manny Pacquiao

After coming home to a hero's welcome in General Santos City on Monday, boxing icon Manny Pacquiao will get a victory parade in Makati City on Thursday.

The Makati City government on Wednesday said it will fete Pacquiao with an assembly in City Hall and a victory parade toward Ayala Avenue leading to the Hotel InterCon.

In a post on its website, the city government said Pacquiao is scheduled to make a courtesy call to Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. at 9 a.m.

A parade will follow at around 10 a.m., moving towards J.P. Rizal then to A.P. Reyes. It will then head for the covered court of Barangay Carmona and proceed to Pasong Tamo. The parade will then turn left at Gil Puyat (Buendia) Avenue, turn right to Ayala Avenue then onward to InterCon where a press conference will be held.

Makati Public Safety Department (MAPSA) enforcers will provide traffic assistance and escort those joining the parade.

Mayor Binay said Makati residents and workers are eager to show their support for Pacquiao, who brought pride to the nation with his win over Chris Algieri last Sunday.

He lauded Binay for inspiring millions of people around the world, including the people of Makati, "with his indomitable spirit and extraordinary boxing skills.”

Binay ally

Pacquiao, who also serves as representative of Sarangani, is an ally of Vice President Jejomar Binay, the father and namesake of the Makati mayor. The elder Binay was his son's predecessor as mayor of the city.

Last October, Pacquiao took time out from his training for Algieri to welcome Binay to General Santos City.

"Maraming mga isyung lumabas about sa ating Vice President pero isa lang ang sasabihin ko sa inyo," said Pacquiao of Binay. "Ang mabuting tao, ang mabuting pulitiko hindi marunong manira ng kapwa."

Before that, Binay's United Nationalist Alliance said that Pacquiao was among the names it was considering as a possible senatorial candidate in 2016. — Joel Locsin/JST, GMA News
