22 OFWs rescued from substandard living conditions in Denmark — DFA

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expressed gratitude to Denmark authorities for the rescue of 22 overseas Filipino workers from deplorable living and working conditions.

The rescued Filipinos, identified as truck drivers, were rescued by Danish police after raiding their camp in the town of Padborg early Tuesday morning.

The DFA said the Philippine Embassy in Norway, which has jurisdiction over Denmark, has been working closely with Danish authorities in the past weeks to assist the 22 OFWs who were suffering from poor working conditions.

"Ambassador Batoon-Garcia flew to Denmark with a team to determine the status of the drivers whose living conditions the Embassy said are unacceptable by any standard. Ambassador Batoon-Garcia said the Embassy will make sure that Filipinos are treated humanely and with dignity," DFA said.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III also instructed a Geneva-based labor attache to immediately proceed to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, to investigate the situation of the rescued drivers.

The DFA, Department of Labor and Employment, and Philippine Embassy to Norway assured that they will assist the rescued OFWs until an amicable solution is reached. — BAP, GMA News
