Fil-Turkish attacked by man with swastika tattoo in Orange County

A Filipino-Turkish man in Orange County was beaten up by a man with a swastika tattoo earlier this month in what police and prosecutors said was a hate crime, a report on the LA Times said.

Citing the district attorney’s office, the report said the suspect, 41-year-old Tyson Theodore Mayfield, was charged with one felony count of assault in a hate crime causing injury.

According to the report, Mayfield, a Fullerton resident, was borrowing a lighter from the Filipino-Turkish man, but became agitated when the victim said he didn't have one.

Aside from punching the victim several times, Mayfield also allegedly hurled a racial slur against the victim, who was not identified in the report.

The police learned of the attack, which happened on September 4 in a parking lot, through a witness, the LA Times report said.

The report also said Mayfield, who could be jailed up to six years if convicted, has a swastika tattoo on his right shoulder. His trial is set to start next week. —KBK, GMA News
