Pinay in freezer in Kuwait identified by authorities —Bello

The woman found in a freezer in an abandoned apartment in Kuwait has been confirmed as a Filipina and her identity has finally been revealed.

According to a tweet on Super Radyo dzBB, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III revealed that a DNA test identified the body as Joanna Daniela Demafelis. She was initially identified as Dimapilis.

Prior to the discovery, the woman was thought to be a domestic worker.

A Lebanese man who sponsored the Filipina and his Syrian wife left the apartment, their residence, in November 2016 due to charges related to fake checks.

The couple, according to a report on Unang Balita on Friday, allegedly threatened to keep the apartment locked to keep their belongings safe.

Another Filipina domestic helper identified the remains of Demafelis, who supposedly confided to her various abuses she suffered at the hands of her employers.

Demafelis was allegedly physically abused, got starved, and was not paid for her work.

The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait urged authorities to expedite their investigation into the year-long incident.

Police found Demafelis' body in a freezer in the apartment while inspecting the unit in accordance with an eviction notice to be served on the couple.

The discovery of the body comes on the heels of a debate on whether to extend the suspension of deployment of new OFWs to Kuwait or turn it into a permanent labor ban.

An estimated 250,000 Filipinos work in Kuwait, 75 percent of which are domestic helpers. Some 300 Filipinos apply for work in Kuwait every day. —Rie Takumi/MDM/KG/BM, GMA News
