Work on repairing and sprucing the Quirino Grandstand in Manila started to peak Thursday, in preparation for Pope Francis' visit to the Philippines this January.

Photos posted by radio dzBB's Glen Juego showed workers repainting and preparing parts of the grandstand to make sure the structure is safe.

Heavy equipment was also brought in to aid in the preparations.

Support structures were also put up at the grandstand, the venue of one of the Masses the pope will celebrate while in the Philippines.

But only two Masses – at Quirino Grandstand and in Tacloban City – will be open to the public. The pope's other events are by invitation only.

"In some of the events like the encounter with the families... because of the constraint also of the venues, only representatives from different sectors or provinces will be accommodated," Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said, according to an article posted Wednesday on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines news site.

The Mass at Tacloban City airport in Leyte is scheduled at 10 a.m. of Jan. 17. The Mass at the Luneta in Manila is scheduled at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 18. Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
