Even though Mindanao is not on Pope Francis' itinerary when he visits the Philippines in January, a Catholic bishop is hoping the visit would also benefit the southern Philippines.

Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad on Thursday said he hopes the papal visit will help bring much-needed peace to Mindanao.

"The arrival of the Pope in the Philippines is truly a pastoral visit. Even if he could not come here in Mindanao, but then it is ... near to us because he has visited the Philippines and it has strengthened our faith and hope and eventually Mindanao will be peaceful, that he will be able to unite, unify Muslims and Christians," Jumoad said in an interview on Church-run Radyo Veritas.

Parts of the interview were posted on Radyo Veritas' website.

Mindanao had been the site of several recent clashes, including one involving the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in Cotabato.

Last week, a clash between the military and the Abu Sayyaf in Talipao, Sulu left five soldiers dead and 26 others injured.

Joint Task Group Sulu Col. Allan Arojado said four Abu Sayyaf bandits died in the firefight.

Pope Francis is due to visit the Philippines Jan. 15 to 19. He will have lunch with the poor and the survivors of super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) during his stay.  Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
