AFP to public: Pope’s safety during PHL visit is everyone’s responsibility

The Armed Forces of the Philippines on Thursday asked the public to cooperate in ensuring the safety of Pope Francis during his visit to the country early next year.

In an interview with reporters, AFP public affairs chief Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc said while no threat is seen during the papal visit, Filipinos should remain vigilant and report any threat against the Pope.

"Nananawagan tayo lagi sa ating mga kababayan na 'yung ating responsibilidad — shared responsibility when it comes to security — kapag may kahinahinalang mga bagay, dapat i-report agad sa mga kinauukulan," Harold Cabunoc said.

"Dapat huwag tayong mag-atubili na ito ay ipaabot sa mga uniformed servies, sa Philippine National Police at maging sa ating mga kasundaluhan na makikita natin," he added.

He also said it is an honor for any country to be visited by the Pope, "kaya pagtulungan natin ang kanyang seguridad."

Cabunoc said that while they see no potential threat, law enforcement agencies in the country are on full alert.

"Malaking challenge ang kanyang pagbisita dahil sobra pa sa VIP 'yung ating Santo Papa... Ngunit sa pamamagitan ng tamang paghahanda ng iba't-ibang law enforcement agencies, magagampanan natin 'yung ating tungkulin," he said

He noted that at least two of their battalions, including UN peacekeepers from Golan Heights, have been assigned to guard Pope Francis during his visit in the country. Th Pope's visit is from Jan. 15 to 19.  Amanda Fernandez/RSJ, GMA News
