Coast Guard sets up maritime security for Pope Francis

The Philippine Coast Guard has set up two maritime task forces for the upcoming visit of Pope Francis this January.

Both task forces are to secure the maritime area at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Luneta Park in Manila, and in Tacloban City.

In an article posted Wednesday on its website, the Coast Guard said the task force "aims to ensure that threats which could possibly be initiated along the coastal waters will be negated."

Quick Response Teams and Emergency Response Units will be strategically deployed in areas of operations to support safety and security plans.

A Coast Guard air ambulance will be deployed in case of emergency evacuation and for maritime security surveillance.

Pope Francis will be in the Philippines from Jan. 15 to 19.

Maritime security plans

Coast Guard units in Metro Manila-Central Luzon (CGDNCR-CL) and Eastern Visayas prepared a Maritime Security Plan for the visit.

Other plans readied for the event include:

- Sustained and Intensified Seaborne Patrol Plan
- Weapons and Communications Plan
- Contingency Plan
- Medical Emergency Plan
- Security Checklist

The Coast Guard is also coordinating with the Philippine Navy, Philippine National Police and other concerned government agencies. —NB, GMA News
