Pope Francis has designated a Mindanao-based cardinal to represent him in an event in Japan this March, the Vatican Information Service (VIS) reported.

The Pope appointed Cotabato Archbishop Cardinal Orlando Quevedo as his special envoy to the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the “hidden Christians of Japan.”

In a Jan. 17 report, the VIS said the event is to be held in Nagasaki from March 14 to 17.

A separate report on MindaNews quoted Quevedo as saying Papal Nuncio Giuseppe Pinto “officially" confirmed it to him after the Luneta Mass of the Pope last Sunday.

However, Quevedo said he had already been informed about the designation as early as October 2014.

Pope Francis visited the Philippines Jan. 15 to 19, touching Filipinos' lives in Metro Manila and Leyte. He left for Rome on Monday. Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
