A police budget officer has been sacked over the delay in the distribution of food allowance for the 20,000 policemen who provided security for the recently concluded papal visit in the Philippines.

Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman C/Supt. Wilben Mayor identified the officer as Supt. Evangeline Martos from the Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG).

Martos was in charge of providing the food allowance for the policemen who were deployed to provide additional security for Pope Francis during his five-day visit to the Philippines.

Each policeman was allotted P2,400 meal allowance for the event, but received only P700 with the PSPG reportedly saying they could get the rest after their attendance was verified.

Martos had earlier admitted to her shortcoming, saying it was difficult to handle the budget for such a big event.

Mayor said Martos would undergo a pre-charge evaluation by the Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management. He also clarified that the food allowance budget was supposed to be for “food provisions” and was not meant as individual “food allowance”.

“It was not supposed to be given out as cash to police personnel, but was supposed to be allotted as provisions for food for the troops,” he said.

But due to the various changes in the deployment plan of police personnel, some unit commanders considered giving out cash instead.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas has already ordered an investigation on the delay. Andrei Medina/KBK, GMA News
