Pope Francis has named a Philippine-born bishop to serve as papal nuncio—his representative—in Australia.

Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana, a native of Bicol, will fill the post vacated by Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Church-run Radyo Veritas reported Wednesday.

Yllana, who hails from Naga City and was ordained at the Caceres Archdiocese, is serving as the Vatican's representative to the Republic ng Congo, the Veritas report said.

The new appointee studied international diplomacy at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome, and was first assigned as Nuncio to Papua New Guinea in 2001.

Yllana also served as the Holy See's diplomatic representative to Solomon Islands, Pakistan and Congo. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
