Pope Francis will address the UN General Assembly on September 25, as the international body marks its 70th anniversary, officials said Wednesday.

During his visit, the pope is also due to meet with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Assembly President Sam Kutesa.

Ban "is confident that His Holiness Pope Francis's visit will inspire the international community to redouble its efforts to achieve human dignity for all through ensuring greater social justice, tolerance and understanding among all of the world's peoples," the United Nations said in a statement.

The United Nations was established in 1945 in the aftermath of World War II, replacing the League of Nations.

Member states this year will discuss sustainable development, climate change and the "future peace and well-being of humankind," the UN statement read.  — Agence France-Presse
