Pope appoints new Quezon bishop

Pope Francis has appointed a new bishop to serve at least 912,000 Filipino Catholics in Gumaca town in Quezon province, the Vatican announced Friday.

The Vatican website said the Pope appointed Msgr. Victor Ocampo as bishop of Gumaca, which it said has a population of 1,027,000 including 912,000 Catholics.

"Bishop-elect Ocampo was born in Angeles City, Pampanga in the Diocese of Balanga, Philippines in 1952. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Balanga in 1977," it said.

It said Gumaca has 64 priests and 65 religious.

The Vatican noted Ocampo served in various pastoral and diocesan roles, most recently as chancellor of the Diocese of Balanga since 2008.

He also served as:

- pastor of St. Dominic de Guzman Parish in Abuvay, Balanga (since 1986)
- director of the Biblical Apostolate (since 1986)
- director of the Commission on the Family and Life (since 2008)
- member of the College of Consultors (since 2013).
