Pope Francis visited the 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan on Friday (September 25), laying a white rose on the reflecting pool wall.

Francis, along with Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, arrived at the Ground Zero site in the late morning following an address at the United Nations.

With his hands held tightly together, Francis appeared to pray for about a minute along the reflecting pool wall, which is inscribe with the names of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The Pope then met with various people including families of relatives of first responders and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Francis then took part in a multi-religious event held in the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

Later in the day he is scheduled to attend an event at a Catholic School in East Harlem, take a drive through Central Park and then give a mass to thousands of New York parishioners at Madison Square Garden.   Reuters
