Myanmar prelate to represent Pope Francis in Int’l Eucharistic Congress

Pope Francis has appointed a Myanmar cardinal to represent him during the 51st International Eucharistic Congress in Cebu City in January 2016.

Cardinal Charles Maung from the archdiocese of Mandalay, Myanmar was designated as Papal Legate to the religious gathering which will be held on January 24-31, 2016.

Maung was appointed bishop of Pathein by Pope John Paul II on March 13, 1996 and he served as the president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar from 2000 to 2006.

Pope Francis proclaimed him a cardinal on February 14, 2015.
 
Meanwhile, Elvira Yap-Go, a member of the congress' organizing committee, said preparations for the event were already 80 percent complete.
 
Go noted that the pavilion where the plenary session will be held is already complete.

"Konting improvments na lang [ang kailangan] and which is what we are trying to do," Go said.
 
This is the second time the country will host the eucharistic congress. The first time was in 1937.
