A very busy year for Pope Francis
December 30, 2015 9:30pm

In his third year as the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis continued to bridge gaps, reaching out to his flock through everything from state visits to video calls, general audiences, and reforms that aim to address problems in the Church.

The pontiff is leading the Church into the Jubilee Year of Mercy, and on the way he has made a number of milestones geared towards a more open Church, and one that recognizes the importance of the environment.

It was a year in which he made very clear that the fight against climate change is vital in the fight against poverty: he was the first pope to write an encyclical on the environment.

It was also a year in which he stressed the importance of the family—as well as of dioceses: in another first, Pope Francis allowed cathedrals and major churches around the world to create Holy Doors of their own to welcome those who seek forgiveness.

While he marked 2015 with a number of serious decisions amid scrutiny and division, the year also saw light moments and interactions from the popular pope—from missing his usual pizza run to letting others ride his popemobile—that endeared him even more to many.
