MILF, MNLF hold OIC-backed talks in Jeddah

With the facilitation of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), two Philippine secessionist groups held a two-day meeting in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

The meeting between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) stemmed from OIC resolutions for them to cooperate for peace.

"The meeting is in line with several OIC resolutions calling on the leadership of both the MNLF and MILF to continue their efforts at 'joint coordination and collaboration to achieve peace and development for the Bangsamoro People,'" the MILF said on its website Thursday afternoon.

At the end of the meeting at OIC headquarters last Dec. 6 and 7, both sides signed a report that affirmed:

- The need to coordinate to achieve a just and lasting peaceful solution for the full restoration of the political, civil and economic rights of the Bangsamoro people; and

- To update each other and the OIC of the developments in the peace processes, the difficulties facing each other process and the way OIC could offer its help.

Signing the report were Atty. Randolph Parcasio for the MNLF; Roberto Maulana Alonto for the MILF; and Kasim El-Masry for the OIC.

The MILF noted the latest OIC resolution on the MNLF-MILF “joint coordination and collaboration” is Resolution No. 28-MM on the “Question of Muslims in Southern Philippines,” passed during the 38th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers.

Representing the MNLF were:
- chairman Nur Misuari
- lawyer Randoph Parcasio, Misuari’s Executive Secretary when he was ARMM Governor
- Ustadz Abdulbaki Abubakar

Representing the MILF were:
- peace panel member Robert Maulana Alonto
- Salim Sahaji
- Mashor Haqqani.

The MILF said Misuari did not attend the meeting and tasked Parcasio and Abubakar to represent and speak on behalf of the MNLF as he was reportedly “not feeling well."

Quoting the OIC resolution, the MILF said it and the MNLF were urged “to continue their efforts at joint coordination and collaboration to achieve peace and development for the Bangsamoro people, based on the agreement signed between them on the margins of the thirty-seventh session of the Council of Foreign Ministers, and commends the efforts of the Secretary General in this regards and invites him to continue these efforts.” — LBG, GMA News
