Pinoy doctor cited for best medical presentation in Hong Kong

Filipino doctor Michael Manio was cited for giving the best medical study presentation at the Hong Kong University early this month, the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong reported.   Manio bested other doctorate students who presented poster presentations of their studies, the consulate general said.   "Dr. Manio was awarded a citation for best presentation, one of only 10 of 159 to receive the honor, in simple ceremonies the following day at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) grounds. He is currently in the middle of a three-year PhD fellowship at the HKU," it said.   His study involved the In vivo administration of LPS reduces dexmedetomidine-induced contraction in isolated rat aortae, and was presented at the Laboratory Block of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine in Pok Fu Lam.   Citing the study, the Consulate General said Manio's research can potentially reduce the hospital stay of patients with sepsis, a potentially deadly medical condition where the bloodstream is overwhelmed by bacteria.   "Given only two minutes to present his study, Dr. Manio articulately explained the benefits of lipopolysaccharide administration to prevent dexmedetomidine-related cardiovascular complications before a panel of experts who asked some questions related to his study afterward," the Consulate General said.   Meanwhile, the Consulate General said Manio plans to return to Angeles University and the University of the Philippines College of Medicine upon completion of his second doctorate degree.   He will then teach his students the different research techniques that he learned while in Hong Kong.   Manio is scheduled to present his study at the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics on April 21 to 25, 2012 in San Diego, California, before it is eventually published. - VVP, GMA News
