AsusTek rolls out world's first 7in quad-core tablet

As part of its efforts for an aggressive tablet shipment target this year, Taiwan-based Asustek Computer Inc. launched this week the world’s first seven-inch quad-core tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

The seven-inch Eee Pad MemO, introduced by Asustek Chief Executive Jerry Shen, will have a Wi-Fi version that will be priced at $249, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported.

It will go on sale in the second quarter of 2012, the CNA report quoted an Asus statement as saying.

Only last Jan. 6, Asus said it expects to triple its tablet computer sales from 1.8 million units in 2011 to six million this year.

It had touted its early adoption of Android 4.0, the latest operating system for mobile devices from Google Inc.

Android OS is expected to improve interoperability across personal computers, smartphones and tablets and allows app developers to achieve higher synergy.

On the other hand, Asustek said it will expand its staff of researchers working on Android software from 300 people in 2011 to 400 this year, with another 150 engineers focusing on Microsoft Corp.’s upcoming flagship OS Windows 8. — TJD, GMA News
