13 more solons join Corona impeach bid

Thirteen more members of the House of Representatives, including congressmen aligned with the opposition, have signed the impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Renato Corona, bringing the total number of lawmakers who want the chief justice out of office to 201.   In a statement, the House prosecution secretariat led by Bohol Rep. Rene Relampagos said the lawmakers submitted a three-page motion last week saying that they have read the verified impeachment complaint against Corona and decided to concur to the chamber’s decision to oust the chief justice.   The 13 lawmakers were:

  • Zamboanga City Rep. Erico Fabian,
  • AKO Bicol party-list Rep. Christopher Co,
  • Laguna Rep. Dan Fernandez,
  • Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Maranon,
  • Ilocos Sur Rep. Eric Singson Jr.,
  • Bukidnon Rep. Florencio Flores Jr.,
  • Abante Mindanao party-list Rep. Maximo Rodriguez Jr.,
  • Capiz Rep. Jane Castro,
  • Albay Rep. Al Francis Bichara,
  • PBA party-list Rep. Mark Sambar,
  • Nueva Ecija Rep. Rodolfo Antonino,
  • Northern Samar Rep. Emil Ong, and
  • Masbate Rep. Antonio Kho
These House members are in addition to the 188 lawmakers who agreed to impeach Corona last December for alleged betrayal of public trust, graft and corruption and culpable violation of the Constitution.   Four of the new signatories of the impeachment complaint—Antonino, Ong, Castro, and Kho—are aligned with the Lakas-Kampi-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) party, where former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo sits as president emeritus.   One of the articles of impeachment against Corona accuses him of partiality to Mrs. Arroyo, who appointed him to the post. Corona also once served as her chief of staff, spokesperson and executive secretary.   Corona is expected to face the Senate, sitting as impeachment court, on Monday for the start of trial. — KBK, GMA News
