Skin and bones

Episode on July 21, 2007 Saturday late night As the nation observes Nutrition Month this July, Sine Totoo features the documentary that opened the eyes of many Filipino viewers to the shocking extent of malnutrition in the Philippines. “Buto’t Balat", written and hosted by Kara David, showed one dramatic case after another of children in Bicol suffering from extreme malnutrition. Angela, the first child featured, was so thin she no longer had the strength to stand or walk. Julie Ann was an infant given coffee to drink instead of milk, because it was all her family could afford. 14-year old Jeremy was a teenage boy with the weight of a 2-year old toddler. The idea of producing “Buto’t Balat" came about when Kara and her longtime director and executive producer Lloyd Navera discovered the Philippines ranks second to Sub-Saharan Africa in terms of malnutrition. In their interview with Sine Totoo host Howie Severino, Kara and Lloyd share their objective of calling both viewers and the government to action on this issue through the documentary. “Buto’t Balat" was awarded the Best Social Awareness Program at the 2005 Asian TV Awards, the Silver Screen Award at the 2006 US International Film and Video Festival, and was a Finalist at the 2005 Japan Prize. But a sad fate awaited the child subjects Angela, Jeremy, and Julie Ann. Find out their full story this Saturday late night over GMA-7, when Sine Totoo presents “Buto’t Balat".
