"Ambulansiyang de Paa," Kara David's Peabody Award-winning Documentary

Episode on May 24, 3010 (replay) Monday, after Saksi! “AMBULANCE ON FOOT" Kara David’s Peabody Award-winning documentary Witness the eye-opening documentary that merited the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award. This Monday, relive the unforgettable journey with Kara David. Seven years after her award-winning documentary “Gamu-gamo sa Dilim," Kara returns to Bansud, Oriental Mindoro where she first documented the plight of a poor Mangyan community. Upon her return, she discovers nothing has changed since her first visit. And for some residents of Bansud, things have gotten even worse. Kara learns that access to immediate medical care is as remote as the nearest health facility in the province. She meets several residents already towing the line between life and death. Lowen Tayo has tuberculosis. Despite the relative ease of curing TB now, Lowen’s sickness has worsened due to the town’s lack of medical facilities. Just as badly situated are John Lloyd and Wendy. John Lloyd has bronchopneumonia and hernia, while Wendy has severe burns all over her body. Since the hospital is a long way from Bansud, one can only wonder how their conditions may be remedied. The “ambulance on foot" appears to be the residents’ only recourse. Hoisted upon woven hammocks, Bansud patients are brought to the nearest health facility on foot by their neighbors and loved ones. The trail is muddy, steep, and dangerous, yet upon reaching their destination, the families of the sick are confronted with more problems. I-Witness’ “Ambulance on Foot" airs this Monday, May 24 after Saksi.
